Homeowners can sometimes eliminate a mild musty smell by fixing an obvious moisture source — a leaking supply line, a clogged AC condensate drain, a stopped-up dryer vent — and by drying and cleaning the affected area within the first 24–48 hours. Once porous materials (drywall, insulation, carpet padding, engineered wood) have been wet for more than about 48 hours, the IICRC S520 standard treats them as Category 2 or 3 damage requiring controlled removal, not disinfection.
